Slow DL Speed-

Haha, ya... before you pirates swing your swords at me, I know there is a thread just like this one 3-4 posts down...but I read it, and it really didnt help me much....also...I'm extremely new to this "Internet Setting" here and there stuff...so...

ANYWAYS!~
I'm kind of having trouble with my file downloading speed. I'm currently using 'GetRight Pro' and its only downloading at about 40-50K/sec.
Me and my dad is connected to the router -Wired, and I have 2 older sisters thats connected to it Wireless.

Connection Info:
-SMC 2804WBRP-G Router with 2 Wireless sticks/antena connected.
-D-Link: DSL-300G Generation II Modem
-I am wire connected to the router.
-Password protected Wireless connection (WEP ?).

Helpful Info:
-Using Windows XP Pro.
-I have complete access to the router controls/options.
-I'm using 'AVG Anti-virus Free 8.0' and 'McAfee Security' for virus/spyware - protection.
-My Firewall IS disabled.

Question:
How do I speed up my downloading speed?
Is there ANY safe I can do to MAX out my downloading speed?
Is there a way to slow down my sisters' wireless connection so their downloads wont effect me?
Is 'GetRight Pro' the best downloading software out there?


I've actually been try to find an answer for years.. I am seriously puzzled by this issue at hand. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank You~!

Well...
you haven't provided any info on what your connection speed is SUPPOSED to be.
Is it DSL, Broadband Cable, what speed etc.?
Various companies offer and promise different things.

Also, what are you downloading and from where?
This can make a BIG difference.
Servers across the globe generally WILL be slower than ones closer to you geographically.
And depending on what serving host it is,
they can limit the speed if you are not a "paying member"..eg Rapidshare.

There may be a few tweaks to up the BW capabilities...
but not much in my experience.
And of course,
making sure no one else is hogging the connection.
Unsure if you can limit the network connection speed to your sisters'...
I'll leave that to the experts here.

As far as a DL manager,
I recommend using FlashGet, better by far.

So, as I am away for 2 weeks,
I am sure someone here will provide quality support to you.

My connection is DSL and im just downloading a few games like Lineage 2 interlude, which is 3gbs. And yes, im downloading files 1 by 1, not 2-3 at a time.
L2 is what im currently trying to download. Its a direct download from the p.server site.
The highest download speed I every gone to was around 180-215k/sec.

I have also tried flashget (its actually the first dling program i used, but somehow i switched to getright because it supported more types of files).

If i am not wrong I think you have not mentioned you DSL connection speed .. It if for 1 MB , 2 MB , 4 MB or what ?

And about the speed restricting.. well.. I think you are pretty selfish if you want to reserve 90% of the connection to yourself, since.. well.. when you are as example downloading something, the others can't really can't do anything.. I mean.. if they want to just normally load some website (e.g. google), it will take like.. +20 secs with that connection..

Anyways, you need to
1. Route the connection through YOUR MACHINE, and set the settings on it

OR

2. Go to each one of the computers you mentioned, and set up their max kb/s ratio on each computer.

How do I "Route" the connection through my machine? and set what settings? I kind of need a lil step by step instruction on this...haha...

Btw, I dont consider what I'm doing, 'selfish', since they are the ones downloading their drama/etc and locking up their computer so i have no access to their computer to stop the download for a few seconds. When they're downloading, it takes ME +20sec to browse through websites, and also, i lag like nutz when im trying to play games ( Cant even say "playing" since i keep getting kick for having a high ping).

O ya, sorry for not mention my dsl connection speed is 54Mbps.

are you sure connection speed is 54 mbps? (connection via your internet provider) this is the maximal speed of your router.

First do a speedtest (here:Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test) while your sister's computers are shut down (option 1.close/open their power supply while everyone is away and say that it's a electrical thing option 2. shut down wireless connection via admin control panel, see how later option 3. get a password recover cd via google or here, put it in the cd tray, reset computer, start/boot from cd, get their password!)
Post the results here.

Now the interesting part: Limit these sister's connection and stupid drama thing download.
-enter 192.168.2.1 (like any website but without www and com) in your browser (make sur you don't have any proxy)
-by default your password is "smcadmin" (if you don't remember the password reset the router or ask someone...depends with your level of patience)
-Click on the wireless tab ( you can disable wireless connection right here... ) and click on the "Channel and SSID" link and lower the "transmission rate" (default fully automatic), g Nitro = disabled.
-save and logout

I don't know if there's something else you can do...

If I got the wrong info about the web browser control panel (not same version as you or something else) tell me.

And NEVER say to anyone you limit wireless connection, your sister's would become even more crazy and... this isn't good (drama download thing scares me I think)

Easle doesn't know what he's talking about (), and the speed test is totally inaccurate; however, pagravel's suggestion is still worth testing.

There is a website you can go to, that gives you instructions on how to put your router's configuration and settings to their highest performance, but I cannot remember it at the moment.
