I think linux is the best, since you can modify it as much as you want.. if you can.
And about the softwares... I think the developers just should
1. Start publishing their softwares on linux also
and/or
2. Provide some sort of "patch" for e.g. libraries, so you can use the windows apps on linux

The only thing that actually annoys me with linux (this may be only because I'm not yet completely familiarized with the filesystem, the mount points and C language) is that.. I simply don't know where the application installs the files when you do "make install"

I haven't had any problems with Ubuntu. Other than I have not had the patience to learn how to effectivley use it but that is my fault not the OS.

Ok, let's cut this short:
Ubuntu IS linux, the tittle is wrong, and this would bring a flamewar.
Ubuntu sucks, indeed. But helps people migrate from that closed source privative bitch that Microsoft is, and that MacOSX doesn't quit behing.
Other than that, it's not optimized, and it's just thought to be easy.
This thread is closed, and tittle is changed to reflect something better.
Dude, next time, if you're going to choose a distro to mock of it's performance, choose Gentoo and shut up
As long as you do want to read, and learn, you'll enjoy the faster startup, and the better performance you've heard of, or take Cupertino's (Red Hat) wich will also allow you to customize the performance without too much knowledge.

And NO YOU'RE NOT.
You're basically running a UNIX-COMPLIANT UNIX-DERIVATED SYSTEM, wich is in fact BASED IN freeBSD.
