Ubuntu VS Windows XP Server?

i recently downloaded and installed ubunto linux(my boss uses it, really a windows basher)

i can say i was disgusted thoroughly, i am a first time linux installer and this was a most horrific experience

i will start from the beginning, and keep this comparison unbiased in results so you linux guys dont yell at me(i dont get why you use linux people)

ok so anyways ive used windows for years, its a free operating system as of torrents and files hosting, i recenly obtained a copy of windows server 2003 enterprise, the install was absolutely beautiful, the operating system was very fast, very easy to use and very powerful, and compatable with all of my windows xp drivers

now on the other side of the coin, i downloaded ubunto 7(dont get it)

first i attempted to install on a pentium 3 ibm, 300 mhz, whihc should be plenty from all the hype linux gets right...

no it wasnt the installer crashed, at least 4 times, now i tried it on my spare laptop hard drive, no success installer refrused to work, then ubunto 8 was released

i was hesitant but then after reluctantly reading an article from my boss i decided to install ubunto 8, which was infact painless and installed after only 2 tries on my desktop machine, now linux was very friendly, i am a devoted wireless only user and was suprised that linux found my wireless card, so i jumped right in, lets see what software we have, very nice software i must admit, no need to get any right?, well you dont want to get any, becuase it is alot more difficult to do than windows, luckil they use packages to automate the process

no control panel substitute was available from my searching and the program menu was jumbled and hard to organise, i felt very lost in the folder naming structure, i still have yet to know why the frig it is called the lib folder, why not library :S

i understand that people want an open source operating system that is more stable than windows, but seriously, my windows server has not crashed once, i have an amazing library of applications and they do exactly wha i want them to, my computer boots in seconds and connects every time, my linux machien would not and it left me very frustrated and confused, i in the end formatted the linux infected drive and went back to windows, i think linux is meant for hackers and people with alot of free time and patience, fr me ill keep my windows, never had a problem, probably never will, the reason windows is ripped on so muchis the registry and the temporary files and other problems, but i can deal with them easily thanks to my software, if you wish please post your own opinion on the matter, feel free to post positive and negative comments, just do not insult people or simply rip on this thread because you dissagree with it, instead post how you feel about it

also i encourage you to try ubunto 8, not ubunto 7, it was straight from hell, and it shouldwork fine for you wired guys , just dont try wireless first timers!

Yeah bro Ubunto sucks ass and is totally not a good choice if you want to go into linux, for 1st time users I would recommend either Sabayon or Mint, for more advance users of linux go for Debian trust me linux is alot better once you get the hang of it. I duel boot on my pc and unless im using photoshop my windows side is hardly ever used.

i dual boot Ubuntu and win XP pro
i would actually say that Ubuntu is a very nice distro to start on, its debian based, which is one of the easier distros to learn on, plus it comes with all of the necessary addons to make it a full desktop enviroment. then, when you feel comfortable, you can work your way deeper into the system and get used to things like BASH and other scripting languages, and other stuff like package managers and if you get into servers, server type software for web (such as apache and mysql) and mail (sendmail ws-imap) and the other wide array of software for different applications. if you wanna try it, i recommend just downloading and burning one of thei disks and booting into a live version (runs the OS off the CD, harddrives are untouched), many distros have this feature, so if you dont like ubuntu, check out wikipedia or there are a few other sites that list different types of distros.

The new Ubuntu distro should be out soon.

The local language packs for Ubuntu allows it to be used much more effectively by people who are only fluent in their local afrikan languages.

ubuntu is a really good OS, but it can be quite daunting to non-computer guys. it keeps growing and growing to become more stable and usable, but the rest of the world (and i agree) just want something that works out of the box without much configuration... :(

my friend used to be all pro-ubuntu/linux until we started realising that the real world (businesses) stick with what's tried and true (microsoft/apple) even if they have to pay a pretty penny for it
